Biography
Touted as the Jeff Zhang (±i«Hõ) of his generation by both loyal fans and the local media alike, multitalented Yan Fung (¶¾´¼½å) has won much acclaim and admiration in Toronto even before his rise to New Talent (·s¨q) Champion and Best Vocalist in 2003. In addition to possessing a unique voice in both tone and range, Yan is also an accomplished pianist, with a Grade 10 Piano certification from the Royal Conservatory of Music. In addition to the aforementioned achievements, Yan has performed for audiences of 5000 plus people, as well as at varied venues; from charity galas for the Mon Sheong and Yee Hong organizations to the annual New Talent Singing Competition (Toronto Audition) to impressing audiences at the famous Casino Rama, where many legions of famous East Asian singers have left their mark. In late 2003, Yan also represented Toronto in the International New Talent Singing Competition held in Hong Kong.
Yan got his first taste of the vocal music scene when he was 14, when he entered a church singing contest (and proudly took home the title of 1st Runner Up). In addition, Yan is also a prolific pianist and composer, alongside having taught piano. Since 1995 Yan has entered many singing competitions and earned many notable titles, including:
- Fairchild Television's New Talent Singing Competition (2003) - Champion and Best Vocalist
- 2002 Alliance of Ontario Universities Chinese Student Organization Singing Competition - 2nd Runner Up & Most Popular Contestant
- 2001 Salem Singing Competition - 1st Runner Up
- 2003 HKSUT Singing Contest - 1st Runner Up
- 2003 International New Talent Singing Competition - Toronto Representative
Aside from his immense experience and achievements in singing competitions, Yan has also had the opportunity to judge many subsequent singing contests following his retirement from the competition scene. Beginning in 2004, Yan began a series of appearances as both a guest performer and singing competition judge due to his renowned performing talent as well as musical knowledge. Yan has been a judge at many prominent contests such as the 2004 Alliance Singing Competition (Auditions, Semi-final and Final), the 2004 University Idol Talent Quest (Final), and the 2005 University Idol Talent Quest (Semi-Final). Currently Yan is furthering his abilities at the Royans School of Music in Toronto under the instruction of Diana Yampolsky and is in the process of recording his debut album.
